Feature: 10 Unmissable Lollapalooza Acts... Who Aren't Outkast.

Lollapalooza is getting closer and closer, with Grant Park in Chicago preparing to host some of the world's biggest and most popular artists of the minute. While much attention this year has been given to Outkast's return to the live touring circuit, we've pulled together a list of 10 artists and bands who are definitely worth checking out who have also been touted as either the 'next big thing', currently at 'career best' or simply returning to the huge festival crowds Lolla pulls each year.

THE HEAD AND THE HEART

Seattle band The Head and The Heart have been on Australians radars since they supported Grouplove on their headline Falls Festival sideshows back in 2012. Packing their live sets with unbridled energy and passion for the live interpretation of some seriously amazing music, The Head and The Heart have since continued to become a force all of their own. Locking down headline shows across the globe with their latest album Let's Be Still, The Head and The Heart have clearly developed in between albums, as drummer Tyler Williams told Larry last year, when they sat down to talk at CMJ.

BROKEN BELLS

Broken Bells recently put out a new record in After The Disco, which has since gone on to chart at #5 on the Billboard 200 Chart and sold approx. 45,000 copies. This was within a week. The cred the duo have behind them is ridiculous and well, with Danger Mouse in the fold, you're guaranteed to be in good hands. Stellar live musicians, Broken Bells rank quite high up on the 2014 Lollapalooza line up and for good reason.

GESAFFELSTEIN

Mike Levy's sound made its way to the AU when his Alephrecord resonated well with our writer and he proceeded to kick ass on the Future Music Festival tour back in March. An energising producer whose blend of dark tones with some innovative soundscapes have put Gesaffelstein at the forefront of the great crop of music coming out of France right now, crowds continue to flock to his festival and club sets. With good reason too.

THE 1975

When The 1975 first came out to Australia this year for the Big Day Out earlier this year, their headline sideshows were plenty successful, though it seemed like they copped the short end of the stick with their festival sets. Still, they were still relatively fresh at that time, so no doubt their return in July will provide different results. Overseas, however, it's a totally different sphere. The AU managed to catch them tear it up to massive crowds in Texas and then again at CMW and it was fantastic to see how far they've been able to go off their latest album. Poppy, sexy and with that classic British edge, it's between these guys and Arctic Monkeys reppin' this side of the UK at Lolla and are definitely ones to watch.

BLOOD ORANGE

Dev Hynes is a musical maverick and recently, has had a hand in a fair few projects. It's hard to believe he's only 25, but the artist formerly known as Lightspeed Champion smashed it out of the ballpark with his latest offering. Whether it's channelling some awesome moments of pop, dabbling in some low-fi broody electro numbers or mashing it all up with some sexy R&B, Blood Orange has definitely made his impact and crowds are noticing.

BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB

Strong favourites with us at the AU, the northern Londoners have been growing into such a strong live band over the past few years, yet they still have this 'undiscovered gem' quality about them that makes them so intriguing and endearing. With their fourth album, So Long, See You Tomorrow, showed the band in yet another phase of creative development, kicking things up another notch and producing a great final result.

ANNA LUNOE

Sydney homegirl Anna Lunoe makes this list because a) she's killing it overseas at the moment, b) she's one of the great Aussies flying the flag for house music and c) her star is one that just continues to shine brighter with each club show/festival slot. Having performed alongside the likes of Flume, The Weeknd and Touch Sensitive to name a few, Anna's got the smarts, the performance attitude and the beauty - triple whammy!

JHENE AIKO

Jhené Aiko is that voice you may know from various collaborations with Drake and Childish Gambino in particular of recent times. She's a talented singer-songwriter in her own right though and has become a hot ticket in the R&B world. She's soulful, beautiful and commands a powerful stage presence - what's not to love?

EMINEM

Of course, many Lolla-goers are heading along to see Em do his thing. Sharing top billing with Kings of Leon and Outkast, the rapper of course has a new album to show off, as well as a live show many have been eager to see. For many, the opportunity to see Eminem do his thing live is somewhat of a rarity, so no doubt there's going to be some nostalgia, some surprises and some new impressions being made over the course of his show.

KINGS OF LEON

I think it's safe to say Mechanical Bull marked a return to form for Kings of Leon, in the eyes of fans who had written them off after the first few albums. The Followills have obviously had an up and down ride of a career til this album and it's reflected in the content. Always a popular stadium band, it's going to be interesting to see how they convert this energy into a successful festival set, with many fans turning up with some high expectations of their set.
